Early life

Meg was born in Michigan to Walter Hacked White and Catherine White. She began playing the drums at a young age and felt a great deal of liberation when learning the instrument. Jack and Meg began calling themselves The White Stripes in 1997. Their first gig took place at Gold Dollar in Detroit, Michigan. Meg and Jack married and then quickly divorced after starting the band. She later married guitarist Jackson Smith in 2009.

Role in the band

According to Jack, Meg's unique style on the drum is what gave the band their unique sound. He said that many drummers feel bad about being overly simplistic, but Meg values the primal feeling of the drums. White also sang for the band and took the lead vocal role in "Cold, Cold Night" on the band's fourth album. She also sang "Get Behind Me Satan" and "Who's a Baby."

Since retirement

The White Stripes announced their retirement in February of 2011 as they wanted to leave their legacy intact. Meg also modeled and made appearances on The Simpson's and Josie and the Pussycats.

As a female drummer, Meg White was an integral part of The White Stripes. Although panic attacks have caused her setbacks in her career, she is an extremely talented young woman.
